Our Mission

THE 3 PILLARS OF FOOD RECOVERY NETWORK

increase sustainability

The FRN rescues and donates the large number of meals that are thrown away in campus dining halls when they go unserved. Despite food being a basic resource, nearly 40% of food is wasted in the United States, according to Feeding America. We seek to change this reality at Penn State and in the surrounding community, one meal at a time.

increase FOOD security

The food that is recovered by the FRN is redirected to local pantries, shelters, and other valued organizations. There is always an individual in need of a meal, and the FRN helps provide these meals at no cost, with no questions asked. Addressing an individual’s basic need for food allows them to focus on living their lives without worrying about their next meal.

INCREASE awareness

Many issues such as food waste and food insecurity often go unnoticed, despite their prominence in our communities. By recognizing the need for more responsible management and distribution of resources, the FRN hopes to create an environment in the Penn State community that encourages and ensures reliable access to basic resources for all individuals.
